Seniors well beaten by County Champions...

County Senior Hurling champions for the past two years, Glen Rovers, are hell bent on achieving the three in a row. That was the loud and clear message in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last when we met the Blackpool side.

It might have been a Preliminary round in the Championship and just barely into the month of May but the Glen were in simply brilliant form on the night scoring 2 30 and 2 26 of that massive total came from play. Our tally of 2 14 would win many a game but on the night we were well beaten by a far better side and we can have no excuses really.  We started brightly  with a pointed free from Barry Johnson in the second minute. Pat Horgan levelled for the Glen with a similar score in the fourth minute.  We had three attacks and three wides in the next few minutes before the Glen started scoring good points. They led 4/2 after ten minutes and by 6/ 2 at the end of the first quarter. Thanks to Dinnys huge puck outs we enjoyed a great share of possession but the Glen 's defence repelled us time and time again. A massive free out of our backline by Dinny was finished to the net by Michael Collins in the 16th minute. A brilliant save from Dinny saved a certain Glen goal  in the 20th minute. Points by Daniel Dooley saw us just a single point in arrears in the 21st minute - 1 4 to 0  8. Glen Rovers got through for a goal but almost immediately Shane Walsh rose the green flag for us 2 4 to 1 8. It was hectic stuff now but the Glen outscored us by four points to two before half time - our two white flags coming from Barry Johnson. It meant the half time score was Glen Rovers 1 12 to Bride Rovers 2 6. It was a strange half because we looked like being totally outplayed at times, yet had we converted even half of our seven wides we could easily have been on level terms.  Our second half tally of six points was never going to be enough and the Glen got on top completely and added a massive 1 18. The third quarter was fairly competitive but then the city side upped a gear and scored at will. In fairness to our lads they kept trying hard but the County Champions just bossed the game completely in the last quarter.  A defeat like this is never easy to stomach but the players have to just move on now and prepare for our do or die game against Avondhu in June. For players making their Senior debut it was tough encounter but as the man said 'This is Senior Hurling now'

Team and scorers;

Dinny Fitzgerald , Shane Kearney, Donncha Carr, Tadhg O Sullivan, Mike Kearney, Brian Murphy, Liam Forde, Shane O Connor, Cian O Connor, W. Finnegan, D. Dooley 90 3), DJ Cahill (0 1), , M. Collins (1 1), S. Walsh ( 1 1), B. Johnson ( 0 7, 0 3 frees, 1 65). Subs R. Prendergast, S. Hackett (0 1), M. Liddane..

We defeated Avondhu in Castletownroche in the second round of the championship last year. We had a great first round win over Youghal so the Avondhu game was a no pressure contest as both siders -win or lose, were still going forward in the competition. This year it's a different scenario however as the game will be last chance saloon. Avondhu were well beaten by Carbery on Sunday but with as many as twelve players from Mallow, Kildorrery, Fermoy and Charleville to come on to the side it will be a tough proposition.  A word of thanks to the large Rovers following in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday - we will have better days to come this year.. All in the Bride Rovers Club extend best wishes for a speedy recovery to St Finbarrs Senior Hurling captain Bill Beckett who suffered a serious leg injury in the first game on Saturday evening.

Plenty Games.

The summer has arrived and the playing season is truly in full swing. It's wonderful to see so many teams in action both training and playing games. Last Saturday was truly a hectic one -as well as the Senior Championship our under 9's and under 13 's were away to mallow in hurling games while the under 16's had a home game against Duhallow side Keale Gaels.

Club Meeting

The next Club Executive meeting is on Monday night week next, May 22nd at 8pm

U16 Hurling

Bride Rovers 2-19
Keale Gaels 3-8.
On last Saturday  afternoon we welcomed Keale Gaels, a combination  team from Millstreet and Dromtarriffe to Pairc na Bride for an under 16 H league tie. We were again short on numbers with just fifteen players on the day.  We started very sluggishly and were soon four points down. Edmond Cashman found the net with a great shot but almost immediately we conceded a goal. We never got going in the match in the first half and were down 2-6 to 1-8 at the break. The second half was much better.  Points from Kieran Kearney, Cian Hogan, Craig O Callaghan and  Edmond had us in control. Ruairi O Sullivan and  Seamus Ahern  winning a lot of ball and the whole team began to hurling with more confidence We finished the game strongly with a fine tally of 2 19 which is great scoring.  Its good to get wins and  still have plenty of room for improvement.

Team: Darragh O Sullivan,  Eoghan O Sullivan,  Matthew Quinn, Tomas Macek, Oisin Roche, Patrick O Flynn,  Ruairi O Sullivan,  Seamus Ahern, Kieran Kearney,  Craig O Callaghan, Cian Hogan, Michael Quinlan, Edmund Cashman,  John Buckley, Jacob Powell.

U9 v Mallow

Bride Rovers Under 9s enjoyed an enjoyable win in their hurling match away against Mallow on last Saturday. A stiff breeze was in Mallow's favour in the first half and meant that the Rovers went in level despite dominating possession. The Rovers boys were in the ascendancy again in the second half and only for some wayward shooting would have been out of sight. Ultimately, they were deserved winners by 4-2 to 2-1. The win was all the more satisfying as much of the panel were unavailable due to First Holy  Communion in Bartlemy. On that note, best wishes to the many of this panel making their Communion this weekend. Next match is football v St Finbarrs at home on Wednesday 17 May.

U13 V Mallow

Our under 13 hurlers were the second team from Bride Rovers to travel to Mallow on Saturday last following the under 9's. The home side were well on top early on leading by 8 points to 2. A smashing sideline cut from Adam Walsh was put straight into the path of Ronan O Connell who made no mistake and raised the green flag. This left us just three points adrift at the break,  0 8 to  1 2. The second half was a hum dinger. Mallow led by five points towards the end but a goal from Adam Walsh and points from Adam Hayes and Conor Hazlewood snatched a great draw for us. Final score  2 11 aside. Team; F. O Flynn, C. O Sullivan, L.Collins, E. O Connor, D. Barry, C. Hazlewood, N. Kelleher, J. Ahern, R. O Connell, A. Hayes, A. Walsh,  R. O Callaghan, L. Roche, D. Cashman, C. Tobin, C. Barry B. Knox, J.Keating.

Minor V St Catherines

Our Minor Hurlers travelled to Pairc Naomh Caitrionaigh in Ballynoe last week to play the local side in Rebel Og MAHL game. After a high scoring entertaining game that produced excellent hurling we captured our second brace of League points. The final score was Bride Rovers  0 19 St Catherines 1 12.

Team; B. Hogan, J. O Sullivan, J. Mannix, T. Murray, P. O Leary, P. O Flynn, G. O Sullivan, C. Barry, K. Kearney, C. Ryan,  C.Hogan, C. Coleman, F. Sheehan, S. O Flynn, M. Friel. Great Win for Cork Minors

The Cork Minor Hurling team opened their Munster Championship campaign last Wednesday night with a great win against Waterford. Played in Pairc Ui Rinn the Denis Ring coached side had a 1 24 to 0 8 victory over the Decies boys. This is the last season when the Inter County Minor teams are under 18 as from next year the Minor grade will be under 17. It was proud night for our parish and Club as twins Eoin and Brian Roche lined out in the Red and white of Cork and both lads played well. Cork are now through to the Munster semi-final against reigning Munster and All Ireland champions Tipperary. This game is fixed for Semple Stadium, Thurles on June the 29th next.
